TRAN QUANG HAI ‘s biography :
TRAN QUANG HAI
Tran Quang Hai ,a talented and renowned musician who comes from a family of five generations of musicians. had been working as an ethnomusicologist for the National Center for Scientific Research in France since 1968, attached to the Department of Ethnomusicology of the Musee de l’Homme. He is retired since May 2009.
His field is Vietnamese music, Overtone singing in Siberia. He is member of many international societies : Society for Ethnomusicology, ICTM (executive board member since 2005), Asian Music Society, French Society for Ethnomusicology (founding member), International Jew’s Harp Society (founding member and executive board member ), etc…
He has published 23 records on Vietnamese music (from 1971 to 1997), 4 DVD on overtone singing (2004, 2005, 2006), 2 DVD on traditional music of Vietnam (2000, 2009), 1 DVD on his life by the Belgian TV Production (2005), articles in New Grove Dictionary Music and Musicians (1st – 1980 and 2nd (2001) editions), New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (1984) and some few hundreds of articles in different countries .
Recipient of the Medal of Cristal of the National Center for Scientific Research (France) in 1995 , of the Medal of the Knight of the Legion of Honour (France) in 2002, and of the Medal of Honour of Work, Grand Gold category (France) in 2009.
He has participated in many jew’s harp festivals

The Norwegian Jew’s harp Festival 2014 will be held 19th-21st September
Gamlehorten Gjestegård, Karljohansvern, Horten
Start 19th September at 1800, end 21st September at 1300. The program will be published later.
Festival pass costs NOK 400,- for members of Norwegian Jew’s Harp forum, NOK 600,- for non-members.
If you register for the festival before 31st August, the price will be reduced to
NOK 300,- for members and NOK 500,- for non-members.
Children and students: NOK 250,-.

Đàn môi là một trong những nhạc cụ cổ xưa nhất của loài người (cùng với trống, sáo…). Đàn môi độc đáo nhưng ít người biết đến vì đó là cây đàn của người dân tộc H’mông ở phía Bắc của Việt Nam. Những dân tộc ít người khác như người Gia Rai, Bana… ở Tây Nguyên cũng có cây đàn môi. Đặc biệt, Việt Nam là nơi duy nhất có đến 10 loại đàn môi khác nhau và có thể còn nhiều loại khác chưa được phát hiện hoặc đã bị thất truyền. Trong khi đó, tất cả các nước châu Âu chỉ có một loại đàn môi duy nhất.
GS.TS Trần Quang Hải (con trưởng của GS.TS Trần Văn Khê) là một trong những người sáng lập Hiệp hội Đàn môi thế giới (The International Jew’s Harp Society (IJHS)). Trong nhiều thập kỷ qua, ông đã giới thiệu và biểu diễn đàn môi Việt Nam ở 70 quốc gia và lãnh thổ. Cho đến nay, mặc dù đàn môi có mặt ở nhiều nước nhưng các trang web giới thiệu đàn môi trên thế giới dùng chữ “dan moi”, khẳng định Việt Nam là nơi tập trung loại nhạc cụ thú vị này.
Là người chuyên biểu diễn và sáng chế đàn môi, bạn Đặng Văn Khai Nguyên cho biết: “Đàn môi hay jew’s harp là tên gọi chung của một loại nhạc cụ có nhiều kiểu dáng khác nhau nhưng nguyên lý tạo ra âm thanh thì giống nhau, chất liệu làm bằng kim loại như đồng, sắt, nhôm, bạc… Hoặc bằng tre hay một số ít bằng gỗ dừa, cọ hoặc các cây gỗ lớn khác.
Đàn môi theo tiếng H’mông gọi là Trangz ndangl (cái kèn), Ede gọi là Gốc, Jarai gọi là Roding, người Hrê gọi là Ra-ngói, Cơtu gọi là Ângkro… Nét đặc trưng của đàn môi Việt Nam là được đồng bào dân tộc thiểu số sử dụng như một phương tiện bày tỏ tình cảm hay hẹn hò, giao duyên. Như trong một điệu hát Kơlâu Kơlênh của người Cơ Tu có đề cập đến đàn môi làm bằng tre:
