Are you wondering how to play Jaw harp dubstep, or even just jaw harp or Jew’s harp? its so simple. maybe this video will give you some ideas. Jew’s harp, also called jaw’s harp, juice harp, or guimbard, musical instrument consisting of a thin wood or metal tongue fixed at one end to the base of a two-pronged frame. The player holds the frame to his mouth, which forms a resonance cavity, and activates the instrument’s tongue by either plucking it with the fingers or jerking a string attached to the end of the instrument. The notes produced are limited to the fourth through tenth tones of the harmonic series (in relative pitch, c–e–g–b♭ [approximately]–c′–d′–e′). The tongue produces only one pitch; altering the shape of the mouth cavity isolates the individual harmonics that are components of the tongue’s sound. In 18th-century Europe virtuoso players used instruments with two or more tongues of different pitch, thus allowing a complete musical scale.
A PRELIMINARY RESEARCH ON THE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO JEW’S HARPS (YAKUT KHOMUS AND VIETNAMESE DAN MOI)
The topic of my article has nothing to do with the proposal of the section 3 concerning « Culture and Music of Khomus of the Peoples of Eurasia ». But I focus on the Yakut Khomus and the Vietnamese Dan Moi on the organology , the function and the rôle of these two tiny instruments in their countries respectively .
ORGANOLOGY
The Khomus is a lamellophone instrument, belonging to the heteroglottic category, that means there is a flexible metal tongue or reed attached to a metal frame. The frame is held firmly against the performer’s parted teeth and by plucking the reed with the finger a sound is produced. The mouth acts as a resonator. The modification of the buccal cavity can change the pitch of the notes
KHOMUS
The metal khomus came to existence since last century. The ancient frame was very simple. It has been transformed into an art object thanks to several famous craftmen namely Kristoforow Ivan Illyich considered as an excellent creator of new khomus, danilov Alexander Dmitrievich (for his steel giant khomus of 98cm), Zakharov Ivan Fyodorovich, and above all Mikhail Nikolaevich recognized as the best craftman in the world during the competition of famous craftmen at the 7th International Congress of Khomus Festival in Yakutsk , 23-26 june 2011
The Khomus can be played the nearly the whole nation (from 4 years old to 80 years old). It is unique in the world to know that 90 % of the population can play the Jew’s harp. It is played in solo, sometimes in ensembles (recently), on stage, at festivals and annual contests in Yakutia and other countries (jew’s harp festivals in Austria, Norway, the Netherlands, France, Italy, the USA, Japan).
It is concentrated on the sound colour (imitation of the nature and animals)creating the impressive sensation to the listeners .
As for the Vietnamese DAN MOI , it belongs to the idioglotti category, that means the reed and the frame in brass are of the same piece of material.in one piece . The meaning of DAN MOI is DAN (instrument), MOI (lips). When playing it , the player hels against the lips (not against the teeth like the KHOMUS). This gives more flexibility during playing it. A wooden or bamboo tub of the same length in order to prevent injury when it is put in the pocket.

The Hmong people are a number of indigenous tribe who live in the mountain of South China, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. The fabrication of the Dan Moi has not been changed for centuries . The development of the size and the brass quality are not the aim of these mountaineers . It is used for the own enjoyment and the love talk between the two lovers.
To put the instrument against the lips (never against the teeth like in Khomus), it is very easy to pronounce words when playing . This talking instrument is hard to follow the conversation. Only the Hmong lovers can understand the meaning of the dialogue. I have used the Dan Moi to talk during my workshops and concerts. I have also used this technique as Vocoder in some commercial French films. For many years I gave lessons of speech re-education to the people who lost the vocal folds because of the illness at the Center of repaired voice in Marseille (France). This technique was very simple . I did not make my vocal fold vibrated. Instead, I used the vibration fo the reed of the instrument to substitute my vocal folds. The demonstration was convincing. The produced sound resembled the vocoder’s sound and it was easy to learn how to play in a very short time .This was my experiments. But unfortunately itw as not approved by the ministry of health because I was not a medical doctor.

FUNCTIONS
The Yakut Khomus is focused on the beauty of the instrument, especially the research of diversity of the frame. This research transforms the instrument into an art object created by numerous famous craftsmen. Some Yakut virtuosos have become world famous such as Spiridon Shishigin (his characteristic cuckoo sound) Albina Degtyareva, Juliana Krivoshapkina, Olena Uutai. They have been invited to give concerts in the whole world thanks to their unbelievable sounds produced during their performances (sounds of cranes, horses, wolves, wind ). The marvellous players are mostly women (perhaps thanks to their physical beauty and colorful clothes (Albina, Juliana, Olena Uutai, and trio Ayarkhaan directed by Albina). Their clothes and accessories with the imitating sounds of animals reflects the shamanic rituals . The shamanism is still practised in Yakutia.

The creation of the People of the World Khomus Museum and Center by Ivan Alexeyev and transmitted to Nikolay Shishigin from 2008 till 2018 (date of his passing away) is unique in the world consacrated to this tiny instrument. The government and the whole nation support the development and the diffusion of Khomus . the Yakut Museum of Khomus can be called « live museum » because many international events, festivals, concerts, Jew’s harp music competitions are held there. This instrument can even replace the whole orchestra. The performer can imitate the thud of horses, wolf’s howling, blowing of air, song of skylark, gappling, the voice of cuckoo, etc…

I was surprised to notice that during my visit in Yakutsk in 2011, thousands of children of many elementary schools could play the Khomus jew’s harp correctly.
The Guiness World Record Center decerned the world record in the category « largest mouth harp ensemble » to the exceptional collective performance by 1334 players under the guidance of Ivan Alexeyev and Spiridon Shishigin. I was there and participated to this event with John Wright, Michael Wright, Leo Tadagawa, Keith Howard and several foreign virtuosos from many countries . This ceremony took place in Yakutsk on June 24, 2011 in the framework of the 7th International Jew’s Harp Festival.

In Yakutia the selection of 30 november is the date reserved for Khomus since the last few years. The performers of the whole world participate in that Khomus Day to celebrate the existence of Khomus as the pride of the nation .
From 25 November to 3 December 2015, the People of the World Khomus Museum and Center organized the 25th Anniversary of the existence of the famous museum at the same the celebration of the Khomus Day. I was invited as a special guest to participate in many important events (television ,big concerts, member of the jury of some competitions, a school conert with Leo Tadagawa at Spiridon Shishigin for children

The price of new Khomus created by famous craftsmen is rather high (from 150 US$ and more). Thanks to many festivals and concerts of khomus, number of craftsmen augments year after year . The research of beautiful frame , the quality of metal for the reed, the beauty of sounds with rich harmonics attract more and more demands from foreign performers in spite of the high price .
In Vietnam, the DAN MOI does not pay any attention of the transformation of the instrument For years , even for centuries, the quality of this instrument remains the same . The cost of each instrument is rather low (from 3 to 10 US$) depending the size and the quality of the material. This is one reason that the Dan Moi is widespread in the whole world. Some foreign players use dit for their performances. In particular Nadishana has invented the 5 Dan Moi fixed together for his creation (inspired from the Chinese Xou kian perhaps)

In Germany , Clemens and Roxi discovered the Dan Moi among the Hmong in Sapa (North Viet Nam). Thanks to this discovery , they created the website namely https ;//www.danmoi.de with the idea to sell Dan moi at a low price. Later on, they added more Jew’s harps from other countries . The Yakut Khomus are also shown at their website .

Thanks to that success, they created with some friends the Ancient Trance Festival in Taucha (near Leipzig , Germany). I was invited there to perform the Vietnamese Dan Moi two times . In 2014 the IJHS joined the festival to celebrate the International Jew’s Harp Festival . I met Ivan Alexeyev, Spiridon Shishigin, Mikolay Shishigin, Michael Wright Albina Degtyareva etc…
The Dan Moi Jew’s harp is not well appreciated iin Vietnam because it belongs to the musical tradition of the tribe living in the mountains (there are 55 tribes in Vietnam representing some 10 millions of inhabitangs while the population of the whole country attains 100 millions persons)
I am the only player who plays the Dan Moi outside of Vietnam for more than 50 years in different parts of the world .
In Vietnam, I have trained three yound musicians who played marvelously, in particular DANG VAN KHAI NGUYEN, a gifted musician. In less than 7 years he has mastered the basic techniques of Dan Moi. He is the only foreign player who can play like the Yakut performers . The Yakut television went to Viet Nam and made a film on him. He also plays the Indian Morchang jew’s Harp, the Balinese and Javanese bamboo Jew’s harps. Above all, he is able to fabricate all bamboo Jew’s harps from Vietnam, Philippines (kubing), Bali (genggong) and Sunda (karinding). He owns a big collection of Jew’s harp with more thang 300 different types of Jew’s harps from many countries .I remember to have performed with him and Kim Borisov in Viet Nam in January 2016 during the time Kim and his wife visited Viet Nam.

In the whole country there are less than 10 persons who play the Dan Moi Jew’s harp. The tradition of Dan Moi does not exist in Viet Nam and this instrument is not considered as a musical instrument and it is not taught at national conservatories in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. I am afraid that this instrument will be ignored by the furture yound generations in Viet Nam .
CONCLUSION
For the conclusion of this first comparison , the Yakut Khomus remains the best instrument in the organology and also in the diverse functions. Thanks to the tremendous enthusiasm of the whole nation, the presence at world festivals around the world of numerous world famous performers, and especially the rich contributioin of Ivan Alexeyev about the creation of amazing sound which enables him as a founder of the new school of Jew’s harp in Yakutia (Spiridon Shishigin was his student), the Yakut Khomus plays an important rôle to unify all nations in our sphere.

Sự có mặt của Giáo sư Tiến sĩ Trần Quang Hải ở nhiều lễ hội đàn môi trên thế giới đều được quý mến và tôn trọng vì hầu như mọi nghệ sĩ đàn môi thế giới đều khâm phục tài năng và xem ông là bậc thầy đàn môi thế giới. Ông đã có trên 500 buổi diễn đàn môi tại 45 quốc gia. Ông là sáng lập viênHiệp hội Đàn môi thế giới (IJHS – International Jew’s Harp Society).

Bậc thầy đàn môi thế giới
Giáo sư Hải cho biết, đàn môi nhỏ nhắn nên lúc nào cũng có thể mang theo người. Giá tiền lại rẻ, ai cũng có thể mua được. Ngoài việc tạo âm thanh, đàn môi dùng để nói chuyện với nhau (như dân tộc H’mông sử dụng để tỏ tình lứa đôi). Có thể khẳng định, đàn môi là nhạc cụ duy nhất dùng để nói chuyện thay thế giọng nói của con người. Và, học nó cũng đơn giản đến không ngờ, muốn học và chơi căn bản thì không khó. Chỉ mất chừng 15 phút là có thể khảy ra tiếng và tạo một số bồi âm thoát ra từ cây đàn. Ai cũng có thể học và chơi được!
Ông kể về một lần đem đàn môi Việt “đi đánh xứ người”, “Cách đây trên 40 năm khi tôi chơi đàn môi Việt Nam lồng tiếng nói cho một nhân vật robot trong phim hoạt hình. Mọi người ngạc nhiên khi tôi phát ra âm thanh từ đàn môi giống y như âm thanh điện tử dùng cho robot. Chỉ với một nhạc cụ nhỏ mà tôi đã thay thế cho cả bộ máy điện tử, làm cho hãng phim mướn tôi rất hài lòng vì đỡ tốn lại vừa lạ mắt. Đến năm 1985, trong kỳ trình diễn tại một lễ hội nhạc dân tộc ở Đức, tôi biểu diễn đàn môi trước công chúng. Họ thấy đàn môi Việt Nam mỏng manh mà âm thanh vang dội tạo bồi âm trong sáng rất ngạc nhiên và thán phục. Họ không ngờ là ở Việt Nam lại có một nhạc cụ xinh xắn và lại tạo âm thanh hay hơn đàn môi của xứ họ. Mà Đức là nước có truyền thống đàn môi lâu đời”. Theo Giáo sư Hải, tính về số lượng sản xuất thì đàn môi nước Áo phổ biến nhất vì được sản xuất công nghiệp (vài triệu cái bán trong một năm). Nhưng nếu tính về phẩm chất và cao độ chính xác về bồi âm thì đàn môi Việt Nam rất được mến chuộng và hiện được thế giới cho là đàn môi đẹp, rẻ, cao độ bồi âm chính xác nhất.
Ông còn dùng đàn môi Việt Nam trong việc chữa trị giọng nói cho những người bị ung thư cổ họng. Có thể dùng đàn môi thay thế dây thanh quản mà sau thời gian luyện tập có thể tạo một giọng nói giống như những người mang một máy phát âm để trong cổ họng. Chúng ta tin rằng, thời gian tới đây sẽ có nhiều kết quả tốt đẹp đem niềm vui sống cho những người chẳng may gặp phải căn bệnh nan y nơi thanh quản.
Giáo sư Hải đã đến nhiều nước tham gia biểu diễn tại các festival đàn môi quốc tế, như tại xứ Áo (1998), Na Uy (2002), ), Nhật Bản (2002,2008), Hà Lan (2006), đảo Sicily, Ý (2005, 2013), Brazil (2007), Hungari (2007,2010), Úc châu (2008), Canada (2011), Argentina (2011),Yakutia (2011), Nga (2012), Trung Quốc (2013), Đức (2014), Ba Lan (2016). Ông trực tiếp giảng dạy àn môi cho nhiều người. Và, dạy “hàm thụ” các khóa học đàn môi qua youtube cho nhiều học trò khác.

Nhưng người mà Giáo sư Hải ưng ý nhất là Đặng Văn Khai Nguyên, năm nay 25 tuổi, sống tại huyện Tân Phú, tỉnh Đồng Nai. Ông kể: “Gặp tôi Nguyên nói, một lần tình cờ theo dõi chương trình văn hóa nghệ thuật trên truyền hình, Nguyên biết tôi và phát hiện đàn môi là một nhạc cụ độc đáo, (trước đó thì cháu không theo đuổi một loại hình nghệ thuật nào). Sau đó, Nguyên tìm hiểu trên internet, mua được hai cây đàn môi dân tộc H’mông, tự tập chơi và yêu thích từ đó. Một thời gian, Nguyên chủ động liên lạc với tôi qua email, nhờ hướng dẫn chỉ bảo và được tôi nhận làm học trò vào tháng 8/2011. Tôi chuyển cho Nguyên nhiều thông tin về đàn môi. Nguyên còn kết hợp những chuyến công tác ở vùng miền núi Tây Bắc (Sapa) và Tây Nguyên (Kom Tum, Đăk Nông, Đăk Lăk) và tìm được một số mẫu đàn môi của dân tộc thiểu số”.
Nguyên chia sẻ những kỷ niệm, như vào năm 2012 được Giáo sư Hải giới thiệu làm thành viên Hiệp hội Đàn môi thế giới. Từ đó, Nguyên liên hệ với bạn bè trên thế giới chung niềm đam mê và tìm hiểu về các kiểu đàn môi của nhiều nước.
Và, từ nhiều cuộc nói chuyện, trao đổi trực tiếp và qua mạng với bạn bè quốc tế, Nguyên đã tìm được thêm nhiều loại đàn môi trên thế giới với nhiều kiểu dáng, nét đặc trưng riêng… Do đó, bên cạnh vệc sử dụng thành thạo đàn môi H’mông, Nguyên còn được bạn bè các nước hướng dẫn học thêm kỹ thuật, khẩu hình chơi đàn môi của Nepal, Ấn Độ, Indonesia, Yakutia (vùng Siberia), Kyrgyzstan, Thái Lan, Nhật… Nguyên còn sưu tầm một lượng đàn môi “khủng” đến 600 cây thuộc nhiều nước.
Nguyên còn có tài chế tác. Với chất liệu bằng tre, anh dựa theo một số mẫu đàn môi của các đất nước khác nhau, làm được những cây đàn môi tre nhiều biến thể như đàn môi tre với nhiều cao độ, trầm bổng khác nhau; đàn môi tre hai đầu; đàn môi tre có 2 hoặc 3 và thậm chí 4 lưỡi gà… Nguyên đã gửi tặng cho bạn bè trên thế giới những cây đàn môi Việt và đàn môi tre do mình làm. Điều này gíup cho nhiều người nước ngoài biết đến đàn môi Việt cùng với nhiều loại nhạc cụ Việt Nam khác. Ở quê mình, Nguyên hướng dẫn một nhóm trẻ em từ 7 tới 14 tuổi tập chơi đàn môi. Trong đó, nhiều em đã bộc lộ năng khiếu. Nguyên còn hướng dẫn qua internet giúp một số bạn trẻ ở xa thích tập chơi đàn môi; qua đó phổ biến loại nhạc cụ xưa, hình dáng thì nhỏ bé nhưng có âm thanh trầm đục huyền ảo làm mê say bao người.
